Italian Renaissance and 19th Century Architecture

Focusing on the reception of the Italian Renaissance within 19th-century historical and architectural culture, this volume situates its subject of inquiry within a multifaceted framework. Intersecting the fields of art and architectural history, art historiography, the history of publishing and photography, collecting and heritage preservation, and even literary history, it makes an interdisciplinary approach the backbone of its in-depth analyses. Opening onto a vast field, it does not seek a single, definitive synthesis, but rather revives the genre of the collective work as an exploratory tool. Extending the discussions initiated by an international seminar held in Paris and Bologna in 2013 and 2014, this publication centers on a dual theme: the construction of the idea of the Renaissance in the 19th century and the way in which the 19th century itself is reflected in the historical period designated by this concept. Through the collected contributions, this book seeks to renew analytical perspectives and problematize the interpretation of the interest in the Renaissance in Italy during the 19th century, in relation to other historical periods. Particular attention is paid to architecture as a key indicator of the motivations and aims that fueled this interest. The studies presented here raise new questions and reignite the debate on a subject that, far from being exhausted, offers a privileged entry point for understanding the processes of reinterpretation, revitalization, and reinterpretation that the 19th century undertook with regard to the past and all its languages.
