Abstract :
This unpublished thesis, submitted for my Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR), examines the issue of material resources as a major environmental challenge for contemporary cities. Within this framework, the work defends the concept of "designing the city through the city," focusing on the material resources available within cities, particularly those derived from reuse. Cities then take on the status of "mines," containing "deposits" ripe for reuse. The concept of "the city through the city" is rooted in a legacy and a history, updating theoretical positions based on a fresh perspective on reuse and the circular economy.
This reflection is situated within the framework of teaching in French schools of architecture and landscape design, which are perceived as a laboratory for experimentation and a stepping stone to the professional world. This work will focus on a specific pedagogical approach, Design-Build, which addresses the issue of material resources. Within this ecosystem, the study examines a specific application context of Design-Build: the metropolitan area. Within this context, the aim is to experiment with reused materials in order to design "the city through the city."
